Mrs. Jay Griggs Dies at 80; Rites Monday

Goodell - Funeral services for Mrs. Jay Griggs, 80, were held Monday afternoon at Johnston Funeral Home, Belmond and at the Goodell EUB Church. The Rev. Elton Miller, Ventura and the Rev. Donald Varce officiated. Burial was in the Amsterdam Cemetery.

Margaret Sarah Grosz was born in Mt. Carroll, Ill. July 12, 1878. She moved to Avery Township in 1892 and taught several years before her marriage to Jay Griggs of Goodell, Oct. 3, 1900. They farmed five miles east of Goodell until they retired to their cottage at Clear Lake several years ago.

Since the death of her husband last July, Mrs. Griggs has been living with her children, but returned to her home two weeks ago. She died there late Saturday. She was a member of the Goodell EUB Church, the WSWS, Royal Neighbors and the American Legion, Klemme.

Surviving are four children, Fernon, Garner; Mrs. Raphael Kernan, Great Falls, Mont.; Mrs. Gerald Burke, Goodell; Kenneth, Des Moines; 11 grandchildren and a sister, Mrs. Corneil Jannsen, Mason City. A daughter, Mrs. Daniel Boone, preceded her in death.

Mrs. Jay Griggs services Mon.

Goodell (Special) - Funeral services for Mrs. Jay Griggs were held Monday, March 23, at the Evangelical U.B. church, Goodell, at 1:30 p.m. The Rev. Elton Miller, pastor of the E.U.B. church at Ventura, and the Rev. Donald Varce officiated. Burial was made in the Amsterdam cemetery at Goodell.

Margaret Sarah Grosz was born at Mt. Carroll, Illinois, on July 12, 1878, the daughter of Henry and Mary Grosz. In 1892, the family moved to Goodell, settling at Butterfield Grove and later moving to Avery township. She attended Normal Training School and then taught in the rural schools in Avery and Twin Lake townships.

On October 3, 1900, she was married to Jay T. Griggs. They established their home in Avery township where their five children, Fernon, Mae, Lela, Nellie, and Kenneth were born. They continued to live there for 41 years, then feeling the need to retire, they moved to Ventura in 1942 and enjoyed a home on the north shore of the lake.

Mrs. Griggs was a member of the Evangelical U.B. church and W.S.C.S. society of the Goodell church, also a member of the Royal Neighbor Lodge and Auxiliary unit in Klemme.

She was a loving wife and mother and a kind neighbor. She passed to her reward on Saturday, March 21, 1959, at the age of 80 years, eight months, and nine days.

She is survived by four children: Fernon F. Griggs, Miller; Mae, (Mrs. Rapheal Kernan), Great Falls, Montana; Nellie, (Mrs. Gerald Burk), Goodell; and Kenneth Griggs, Des Moines; eleven grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Anna Janssen of Mason City; and a brother, Gred Grosz of Brock, Canada.

Her husband, Jay, passed away July 29, 1958, and a daughter, Lela (Mrs. Daniel Boone) in June 1952. A brother, George Grosz, and a sister Caroline (Mrs. Newton McCall) of Fort Dodge, and her parents, preceded her in death
