George Griggs Dies at Belmond; Rites Thursday

Goodell - George Griggs, 84, died early Tuesday at the Belmond Hospital. He had been in failing health the last 15 years and a patient at the Finn Nursing Home, Belmond, the last year.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 1:45 p.m. at the Johnston Funeral Home, Belmond, and at 2 p.m. at the Baptist Church there. The Rev. H. A. McKinney will officiate and burial will be in the Amsterdam Cemetery.

Born Nov. 15, 1874, in Ackley, he was the son of John and Emily Griggs. He had lived on a farm in Avery Township the last 70 years.

Surviving are four children, Mrs. Walter (Shirley) Neuberger, Ventura; Presley, Manly; Harold and Audrey, on the home farm near Goodell; two grandchildren, and three sisters, Mrs. L. W. Sherwood, Mrs. A. C. Carpenter, Mrs. J. J. Cook, all of Goodell.

He was preceded in death by two wives, Mary and Martha; two children and a brother.

George Griggs Dies At Age 84 Years

Last rites will be held today (Thursday) at the Fundamental Baptist church, Belmond, for George W. Griggs, 84, retired farmer who had made Avery township his home for over 70 years.

Rev. H. A. McKinney the church pastor, and Rev. Charles Herman of Charles City conducted the services. Burial was in Amsterdam cemetery. Johnson Funeral Home in charge. Pallbearers were William Rienhart, Fernon Griggs, Robert Roths, Clarence Backmann, Elmer Backmann and Alvin Backmann.

Mr. Griggs had been in failing health for a period of 15 years and for the past year had been cared for at Finn Nursing Home, Belmond. He had become a patient at Belmond Community hospital six days before his death on Tuesday of this week.

Born at Ackley on Nov. 15, 1874, George was the son of John and Emalie Sharp Griggs. He farmed most of his lifetime except for a period that he operated a fish market at Ventura.

Mr. Griggs was married twice - first to Mary Backmann and, upon her death a short time later, to a sister of his first wife, Martha Backmann. His second wife also preceded him in death as did two children in infancy and a brother, Jay Griggs.

Surviving are a daughter and three sons: Mrs. Walter Neuberger, Ventura; Presley Griggs, Manly; Harold Griggs and Audry Griggs, Klemme. Other survivors include three sisters: Mrs. W. L. Sherwood, Maude G. Carpenter and Mrs. J. J.Cook, all of Goodell.
