Alan W. Smith, 53, of Garner, died on Sunday, January 1, 2006, at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a m., on Wednesday, January 4, at the United Methodist Church in Garner with the Rev. David Wagner officiating. Music will be provided by organist, Mary Kopacek who will accompany soloist, Doug Hayes and congregational hymns. Ushers will be Marvin and Maynard Schoneman.

Honorary bearers will be Ron Smith, Mark Huling, Ken Cline, Don Kammrad, Dr. Peter Vidal, Neil Fell, Tim Schmidt, Tom Schultz, Scott Seelhammer, the Garner Rotary Club, the Bethel Masonic Lodge No. 319 and El Kahir Shrine. Interment will be in the Concord Township Cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the church. The Cataldo Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Alan Wayne Smith, the son of Ronald Everett and Mildred (Thornton) Smith, was born May 24, 1952 at Mason City. He graduated from the Garner-Hayfield High School in 1970. He attended Central College in Pella where he received his BA degree in secondary education in 1974. While in college he spent a semester at the World Campus Afloat, touring around the world.

Al owned and operated Our Own Hardware in Lake Mills from 1974 until 1987. He moved to Las Vegas in 1988, where he was a sales manager at an appliance warehouse for 13 years. He returned to Garner in September of 2001 and commented that the best move he ever made was moving back to Garner. He loved attending sporting events of his nieces and nephews, traveling and dogs.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Garner, the Garner Rotary Club, the Bethel Masonic Lodge No. 319 in Garner and the El Kahir Shrine in Cedar Rapids.

Al is survived by his mother, Mildred Smith, of Garner; sister, Cheryll (Duane) Toppin of Ankeny; brother, Lynn (Kathy) Smith of Garner; nieces and nephews, Heather Toppin, Robin Toppin, Ronald Smith, Taylor Smith, James Aberg, Bethany Aberg and Emberly Aberg; a great-niece, Laura Rose Toppin; and his dog, Maya.

He was preceded in death by his father, Ronald E. Smith on October 8, 1981; his maternal grandparents, Monte and Lois Creekmore; paternal grandparents, Walter and Mildred Smith; and twin nieces.
