LaVonne J. Cropley, 1928-2006

LaVonne J. Cropley, 78, of Garner, died on Saturday, October 14, 2006, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, October 17, at the United Methodist Church in Garner, with the Rev. David Wagner officiating. Music was provided by organist, Mary Kopacek. Special music was provided by vocalists, Denise Tompkin, Deanne Wilman and Maggie Voy. Ushers were Maynard Schoneman and Burke Haberkamp.

Honorary bearers were Don Voy, Clark Miller, Lowell Miller, Rich Heki, Dave Voy, Doug Voy, Duane Voy, Derek Voy and Scott Voy. Casket bearers were Steve Cropley, Stuart Cropley, Laurence Cropley, John Cropley, Mike Ringham, Dean Bertilson, John Ringham, Jack Bertilson, Christopher Cropley and Billy Cropley. Burial was in the Concord Township Cemetery in Garner. The Cataldo Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements. Memorials may be directed to Hospice of North Iowa.

LaVonne Jeannette Cropley, the daughter of David and Alice (Stauffacher) Voy, was born on August 17, 1928, on a farm near Ackley. She attended country school near her home and graduated from the Hansell High School in 1946. Following graduation, she worked for a year at the hemp plant and was a waitress in Hampton. From 1947 to 1950 she was employed as a supervisor at the Northwestern Bell Telephone Office in Mason City.

On December 16, 1950, she was married to Charles W. "Pete" Cropley in Ft. Sill, Oklahoma. After living in Cedar Falls and Clear Lake they moved to Garner where they raised their six children together and she enjoyed being a homemaker. After Pete's death, LaVonne worked at Unisys in Clear Lake for two years and sold Avon products for 23 years. As an Avon representative she always enjoyed visiting with her customers.

LaVonne enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren. She always looked forward to attending the activities her grandchildren participated in at school and was always teaching them different things. Her hobbies included reading, sewing, gardening and knitting.

She was a member of the Garner United Methodist Church, UMW and was active in the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts when her children were growing up.

LaVonne is survived by her six children, Steve Cropley of Sheridan, Wyoming, Linda (Mike) Ringham of Garner, Janice (Dean) Bertilson of Garner, Stuart Cropley of Van Nuys, California, Laurence (Amy) Cropley of Sylmar, California and John Cropley of Valley Village, California; grandchildren, Chris and Billy Cropley, Patricia (Ian) Barrick, John Ringham, Emily, Ellen and Jack Bertilson and Lucinda Cropley; great-grandchildren, Mason and Taryan Barrick; sisters, Yolanda (Freddy) Bauman of Chicago, Illinois and Iva (Herb) Heki of Urbandale; a brother, Kermit (Maxine) Voy of Rochester, Minnesota; sisters-in-law, Ruby Luttman of Rockwell and Bess Woodford of St. Bluff; a brother-in-law, Robert Cropley of Seattle, Washington; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, "Pete" on July 6, 1977; and her parents.
