Verna B. Alke, 1917-2005

Verna B. Alke, 87, of Britt, died on Monday, March 7, 2005, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Funeral services were held on Friday, March 11, at the First Lutheran Church in Britt, with the Rev. Dr. John Meyer and Janelle Siffring, AiM, officiating. Music was provided by organist, Donna Tech who accompanied congregational hymns. Ushers were Melvin Pergande and Duane Hanson.

Honorary bearers were Greg Michaelsen, Darwin Michaelsen, Tim Radig, Ed Alke, Kirk Thacker, Paul Thacker, Tom Thacker and Nathan Schwandt. Casket bearers were Curt Holck, Mark Holck, Troy Holck, Duane Seegebarth, Gary Michaelsen, Al Schoeneman, Steve Houdek and Darryll Alke. Burial was in the Evergreen Cemetery, Britt. The Cataldo Funeral Home in Britt was in charge of the arrangements.

Verna B. Alke, the daughter of Adolph and Rose (Dallman) Holck, was born on December 18, 1917 in Orthel Township, Hancock County. She graduated from the Britt High School in 1935, where she received her normal training. She taught at various country schools in the Britt area.

On February 8, 1944, she was married to George Alke at the First Lutheran Church in Britt. They farmed south of Titonka until 1983 when they moved into Britt. In May of 2002, they moved to the Summit House in Britt.

Verna was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Britt, ELCW and the Britt Senior Citizens. She was an active member of the Good Hope Lutheran Church in Titonka, before they moved to Britt. She also was a member of the Neighborhood Club in Titonka.

She is survived by her husband, George Alke of Britt; her daughter, Jan (John) Hana of Garner; a granddaughter, Jennifer (Mike) Dillon of Denver, Colorado; and many nieces and nephews.

Verna was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Lucille Dewey, Erma Bohling and Irene Schoneman; two brothers, Maynard and Harold Holck; and a nephew, Arlin Dewey.
