Margarethe Larsdatter was born July 12, 1834 at Halsnoy, Fjelberg, Hordaland, Norway to Lars Eide Bastiansen and Britha Johannesdatter, the fifth of their nine children. She was baptized on July 20, 1834 at Fjelberg. Birth/ baptismal records found in the Norwegian Digital Archives on-line for Fjelberg, Hordaland, Norway, 1822-1834, pg 86, entry # 77.

Confirmation record found at Norwegian Digital Archives on-line for Fjelberg, Hordaland, Norway, 1835-1851, says confirmed Feb or Sept 18, 1849 (cannot decipher).

Margarethe married Nels Michelson on April 15, 1858 at Eide, Fjelberg, Norway. Marriage record found at Norwegian Digital Archives on-line for Fjelberg, Hordaland, Norway, 1851-1867, page 218, entry# 4: Nils Mikkelsen, age 27, son of Mikkel Nelsen Hallestad and Margarethe Larsdatter, age 23 from Eide, daughter of Lars Bastiansen Eide. Witnesses: Ole Olsen Nordhus and Ole Olsen Borhovde.

The newlyweds left Norway to emigrate to America on April 19, 1858. Emigration record found at Norwegian Digital Archives, on-line for Fjelberg, 1851-1867, page 357 (right side), entry # 48: Nels Mikkelsen Hellestad born March 9, 1832 and Margarethe Larsdatter Eide born July 12, 1834; leaving for Nordre Amerika.

The couple settled first in Illinois and later moved to Iowa.

They had 8 children:
Michael Nathan Michelson (b July 4, 1859 Lisbon, Kendall, Illinois, d August 10, 1951);

Lewis (b January 22, 1862 Lisbon, Illinois, d February 15, 1936 Kanawha, Hancock, Iowa);

Susan B (b July 4, 1863 Hancock, Iowa, d November 10, 1954 Iowa);

Severt (b May 16, 1865 Hancock, Iowa, d July 3, 1950);

Nels (b April 15, 1867 Iowa, d September 24, 1938);

Joseph (b January 1, 1870 Iowa, d September 21, 1939);

Bessie (b December 30, 1871 Iowa, d June 19, 1965 Iowa); and

Anna (b January 19, 1876 Iowa Falls, Hardin, Iowa, d 1957).

Found in the 1885 census living at Elkhart, Polk, Iowa: Nelse Michaelson 53, Margerett Michaelson 50, Severt Michaelson 19, Nelse Michaelson Junior 17, Joseph Michaelson 16, Susan Michaelson 21, Elizabeth Michaelson 14, Anne Michaelson 9.

Found in the 1900 - 1910 censuses at Amsterdam, Hancock, Iowa:
1900: Nels Mikleson 69, Gertie Mikleson 66, Susie Mikleson 35, W H Wrede 34, E L Morphew 23. Says first name is Gertie, born September 1833 (not correct); 8 children, all still living, Married 1857, 43 years.

1910: Nels Michelsen Sr 78, Margita Michelsen 77.

Found in the 1915 census at Kanawha, Hancock, Iowa: Margret Michelson 82, widowed.

Margarethe Michelson died January 25, 1919 at Kanawha, Hancock, Iowa and is buried at the Amsterdam Township Cemetery, Kanawha, Hancock, Iowa.
