Military Rites Given Veteran

Edward Haskin, 100, Buried at Garner; Legion Is in Charge

Garner - Military funeral services for Eward Haskin, 100, Civil war veteran, were held Saturday at the Methodist church in charge of Gifford Olson post No. 256 of the American Legion. The Rev. T. Ernest Hoon delivered the sermon. W. F. Hathaway, Des Moines, commander of Greenville M. Dodge camp. Sons of Union Veterans, and Mrs. Julia Wanamaker, Marengo, department president of the Daughters of Union Veterans, were here to pay tribute to Comrade Haskin and to bring expressions of sympathy for the various state officials of the two organizations.

The American Legion quartet, composed of Fred C. Missal, Charles F. Merten, Selby Broms and J. R. Baggs, who is a veteran of the Spanish-American war, sang two hymns. The flag, draping the casket, was presented by the American Legion to Myron Haskin, oldest son of Comrade Haskin.

Among relatives from a distance were Mr. amd Mrs. Earl Ferleman, Miss Opal Ferleman, Miss Thora Ferleman, Earl Jr., and Mrs. Dorothy Proctor, children of Mr. and Mrs. Ferleman of Mason City. Mr. and Mrs. Anton Pankuk and Mrs. John McBride of Thorton, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Welch of Ames, Miss Effie Haskin of Waterloo.

Surviving are three sons, Myron of Garner, Artel of Waterloo, Ed of Cherokee and a stepson, Ness Gardner of Garner, nine grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Mr. Haskin was married twice. His wives preceded him in death. Pallbearers were J. R. Mounce, Fred Willodson, J. R. Keith, Roy Stille, Orville Johnston and W. F. Millard. Interment was in Concord cemetery near Garner. Only two civil war veterans remain in Hancock county, A. A. Johnson of Corwith and Lew Lewis of Klemme.
