Alma F. Brouwer

GARNER- Alma F. Brouwer, 81, of Garner, died Sunday (Feb. 18, 2001) at the Concord Care Center in Garner.

The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Peace Reformed Church, south of Garner with the Rev. Jeff De Boer officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Cataldo Funeral Home in Garner and will continue one hour prior to services at the church.

Alma Frances Brouwer, the daughter of Michael Peter and Sorine Marie (Steffensen) Jacobsen, was born Nov. 18, 1919, at Garner. She attended school at Garner where she graduated from high school in 1937.

On Feb. 24, 1938, she was married to Richard "Bud" Brouwer at the home of Ben V. and Iris Greiman in Garner. They farmed southwest of Garner until retiring in 1980. Alma also worked as a secretary at the Garner-Hayfield Middle School from 1965 to 1984.

She enjoyed her family, golfing, fishing, playing cards and was active on the political scene as a member of the Democratic Party. Alma always looked forward to her high school class reunion which was celebrated every year since graduating.

Alma was a member of Peace Reformed Church since 1938 where she taught Sunday School, belonged to the Ladies Aid and was an officer of the Ladies
Missionary Society. She was also a member of Homemakers Club, Community Theater, Garner Country Club and was a life-time member of Slippery Elm Country Club in Klemme.

She is survived by her two sons, Michael Brouwer and his wife, Kay, of Burlington, and their two children, Mark Brouwer and his wife, Anne, and Beth Brouwer and her son, Carson, and James Brouwer and his wife, Cherry, of Bemidji, Minn. and their son, Andrew Brouwer and his wife, Pam, and their two sons, Josh and Jacob; and a brother, Egon Jacobsen and his wife, Margaret Ann of Marshalltown.

Shes was preceded in death by her husband, Bud, Feb.10, 1997; and her parents.
