Funeral Services For Mrs. Boehnke held Thursday

Burial of Garner Resident Made in St. John’s Cemetery

The funeral of Mrs. Gust. Boehnke was held from the home in Garner last Thursday at 1 o’clock, and from St. John’s church at 2 o’clock. The Rev. G.A. Koch, for 15 years pastor at St. John’s, spoke in the German language, and the Rev. W.T. Wolfram, pastor of St. John’s for the past ten years, spoke in English. Internment was in the little cemetery south of the church. The pallbearers were the three sons of Mr. and Mrs. Boehnke, William, the Rev. Gust of Potter, Nebraska, and Ed; and three nephews, the sons of Mrs. and Mrs. Carl Boehnke, Albert, Charles and William O. The music was by the regular church choir.

All funeral arrangements were carried out as Mrs. Boehnke had planned during her long illness.

The funeral was very largely attended, as Mrs. Boehnke had long been a resident of the neighborhood. The floral offerings were lovely and many, relatives and friends showing in every way possible the high esteem in which Mrs. Boehnke was held by everyone who knew her.

Following is the obituary read by the pastor, Rev. Wofram:

Albertina Alvina Woiwod, the wife of Gustav Boehnke, was born in Christfelde, Westprussia, Germany, June 22, 1862. Shortly after her birth on June 29, 1862 she was baptized into the Lutheran faith. When 14 years old, Mrs. Boehnke renewed her baptismal vow on the day of her confirmation and promised faithfulness unto her Savior until death.

At the age of 21 years old she emigrated to America coming to Hancock county in 1884, she united in marriage with Mrs. Gustav Boehnke, the marriage being performed by the pioneer missionary, Rev Wiegener, who preached in this vicinity at that time. Mrs. Boehnke being a devoted wife to her husband.

Mr. and Mrs. Boehnke made their home on a farm two and one-half miles northwest of St. John’s church, later retiring in Garner, where the deceased lived until her death. Mrs. Boehnke was a communicate member of St. John’s congregation from those early pioneer days until her departure, was on the charter members the ladies aid society and took and interest in various activities of the church. Having been confined to her bed of sickness since the closing days of last August, Mrs. Boehnke peacefully closed her eyes Monday afternoon, February 4th, at 19 minutes past four o’clock realizing her prayer “For me to live in Christ, to die is gain,” reaching the age of 72 years, 7 months and 14 days.

Those that mourn her death are the sorrow-stricken husband, the children; William, Gustav, Edward and Selma, Mrs. Fred Pilz, Otto having preceded the mother in death, 11 grandchildren, a brother, Carl Woiwod, three sister residing in Germany, Mrs. Elizabeth Schuman, Mrs. Wilhelmina Bohn, and Mrs. Johanna Buekhols*, and many relatives and friends.
