Rev. Kay HooperEunice Freda Robertson, the daughter of Chris and Lillian Marie (Frederick) Schumacher was born February 6, 1914 on the family farm at Ottertail, MN. The family moved to Sumner and then Hampton where Eunice graduated from high school in 1932.
She attended Iowa State Teacher's College in Cedar Falls and then worked as a secretary for the Franklin County Sheriff in Hampton. On April 4, 1937, she was married to William C. Robertson in Hampton. They moved to Oelwein where Eunice worked for Montgomery Ward. From 1938-1941 they lived in Waverly where she worked in the ASCS office. They lived in Bellingham, WA where Eunice worked for Boeing Aircraft as a teletype operator and later in Jacksonville, FL where she was a secretary for a Lieutenant. After the service they moved to Storm Lake where Connie was born in 1947. In 1949, the family came to Garner where they owned and operated the Grill Cafe. In 1955, they sold the cafe to Nick & Ruth Kargas and then operated the Victoria Hotel until 1959. Eunice worked for 20 years at the ASCS office before retiring. Eunice and Bill also owned and
operated Bill's Shoe Store from 1963-1979. Her contributions to her community are both numerous and exemplary. She was named Garner's Outstanding Citizen and later Gainer's Outstanding Senior Citizen. She was a member of the United Methodist Church and U.M.W., taught the Adult Sunday School for 20 years, was district officer for the United Methodist Women, belonged to the American Legion Auxiliary, the Wa-Tan-Ye's, the Garner Public Library Foundation, Inc., the Historical Society Board, Eastern Star, past president and treasurer of the Community Betterment Program, president of Meals on Wheels, coordinator for the Christian Women's Club, Volunteer Coordinator of Winnebago / Hancock County volunteer services administered by the Department of Human Services and also lined up rides for people who needed transportation for medical help.Survivors include her daughter, Connie Howard and her husband, Ted, of River Falls, WI; two grandchildren, Craig Howard and Kimberly Howard; two sisters, Mae Sanford of Fort Dodge and Marion Muhlenbruch and her husband, Erwin, of Latimer; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill, March 26, 1999; her parents; and a brother, Raymond Schumacher.
