Leonard Verner Young, the son of Verner and Gertrude (Klesel) Young, was born May 30, 1931 on a farm near Garner. He attended rural school at Garfield # 7 and graduated from Garner High School in 1949. He farmed with his father until 1952, when he served his country during the Korean Conflict in the U.S. Air Force. He was stationed in Roswell, NM. On June 3, 1953 he married Donna Lou Lehmann at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Garner. They lived in Roswell until his discharge in 1956. They returned to Garner where they farmed west of town. In 1988, they moved to Klemme. Slim drove school bus for the Garner-Hayfield Community Schools, was a milk hauler for the Farmers Co-op Creamery Association in Garner and drove truck for KorBert Meats in Klemme. He also worked for Pioneer Seeds for twenty years managing detasseling crews. In June of 2000, he and Donna completed their three-year lay ministry course and actively ministered to those in need. Slim enjoyed his family, watching boxing on TV, fishing and beekeeping.

He was a lifetime member of St. Boniface Catholic Church, belonged to the Knights of Columbus and was a 4th Degree Knight.

Slim is survived by his wife, Donna of Klemme; three daughters, Patricia Wright and her husband, Dennis, of Grimes and their three children, Andrew, Thomas and Rachel, Linda Young-Streit and her husband, Robert, of Boone and her two sons, Daniel and Adam and Suzan Brunes and her husband, Kevin, of Klemme and their two children, Kristine and Jesse; a brother, Bill Young and his wife, Nancy, of Garner; a sister, Betty Lien and her husband, William, of Kimberling City, MO; many nieces, nephews and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved grandfather, Ferdinand Young; and a foster brother, Robert Flanagan.
