Etta Martha Carothers was born August 28, 1883 at Kimbolton, Guernsey, Ohio to parents George Patterson Carothers (May 20, 1848 Ohio - March 6, 1900 Garner, Hancock, IA) and Emma Ingram (August 18, 1856 Wheeling, Ohio - May 6, 1932 Hancock, Garner, IA). Etta Martha(sometimes found as Martha Etta) was the sixth of eleven children.

Her siblings were:
1. Sarah Ellen Carothers (born November 30, 1875 Kimbolton, Guernsey, Ohio, married Thomas Fotheringham 1897 Garner, IA, married Clarence Burton Groesbeck August 1921 Greeley, Colorado, died February 11, 1971 Greeley, Weld, Colorado);

2. John Hamilton Carothers (born January 15, 1877 Kimbolton, Guernsey, Ohio, married Bertha Schleusner abt. 1903 Iowa, died September 27, 1957 Garner, Hancock, IA);

3. James Dale Carothers (born October 13, 1878 Kimbolton, Guernsey, Ohio, married Dilla Mae Quintus December 11, 1907 Garner, IA, died July 29, 1938 Garner, Hancock, IA);

4. Rosella Jane Carothers (born March 12, 1880 Kimbolton, Guernsey, Ohio, married William Frederick Badker May 7, 1901 Garner, IA, died October 23, 1971 Garner, Hancock, IA);

5. William Garfield Carothers (born November 25, 1881 Guernsey, Ohio, died April 21, 1957 Wisconsin)

6. Elizabeth Miller Carothers (born November 30, 1885 Guernsey, Ohio, married Earl L Eckerson February 16, 1921 Clark, Spink, South Dakota, died September 3, 1940);

7. Mary Josephine Carothers (born August 25, 1887 Kimbolton, Guernsey, Ohio, married James Oran Maley June 20, 1912 Garner, Hancock, IA, died April 15, 1970 Greeley, Weld, Colorado);

8. Minnie Agnes Carothers (born March 10, 1890 Garner, Hancock, IA, married Homer James Young before 1913, died November 2, 1974);

9. Margaret Alys Carothers (born August 1, 1892 Garner, Hancock, IA, married Albert Gustave Lade before 1920 Garner, Hancock, IA, died July 19, 1977 Mason City, Cerro Gordo, IA); and

10. George Albert Carothers (born December 16, 1894 Garner, Hancock, IA, died October 16, 1897 at Garner, Hancock, IA).

The family left Guernsey, Ohio and moved west to settle at Garner, Hancock, Iowa.
Etta can be found in the 1895 census at Garner, Hancock, Iowa: Etta age 11.

Next found in the 1900 census living with an uncle (James Ingram) and his family at Garner, Hancock, IA. Probably helping with housework. Enumerated: James Ingram 46, Minnie Ingram 36, William H Ingram 5, Christana Ingram 0/12, James Caruthers 21, Ettie Caruthers 16.

Etta married Frank Joseph Badker on June 10, 1904 at Garner, Hancock, Iowa. Her sister, Rosella Jane Carothers also married a William Badker (Frank's brother), their children were "double cousins".

Etta Martha and Frank Badker had 11 children:

6. Mildred Francis (stillborn January 2, 1912 at Gary, Deuel, South Dakota);

7. Doris Luetta (August 1915 Gary, Deuel, S. Dakota - 1817 Gary, Deuel, S. Dakota);

8. John Harold (August 4, 1916 Gary, Deuel, South Dakota - December 9, 1997 Mitchell, Davison, South Dakota);

Found in the 1910 census at Center Grove, Dickinson, Iowa: Frank Badker 30, Etta Badker 27, Helen Badker 6, Louis Badker 4, Dean Badker 3, Babe Badker 1 month.

Found in the 1920 census at Clear Lake, Deuel, South Dakota: Frank J Badker 40, Etta Badker 37, Helen Badker 15, Louis Badker 13, Emadine Badker 12, Margaret Badker 10, Frankie Badker 7, John Badker 3 yrs, 5 mos., William Badker 8 mos.

Found in the 1930 census at Ortonville, Big Stone, MN: Frank Bodker 50, Etta Bodker 46, Helen Bodker 25, George Bodker 24, Enmdson Bodker 22, Margaret Bodker 20, Frank Bodker 17, John Bodker 12, William Bodker 11, Jacques Bodker 10, Carles Bodker 8, Wallis Bodker 5/12 (Wallis was Frank and Etta's grandson, his mother was Margaret).

Etta Martha Carothers Badker died December 25, 1938 at a hospital in Minneapolis, Hennepin, Minnesota.

Etta and Frank Badker are buried at the Grandview Cemetery, Gary, Deuel, South Dakota.
