Martha Bredbenner - 1885-1962
Martha Bredbenner was born May 8, 1885 on a farm near Klemme, Iowa. With her parents, Henry and Mary (Roswag) Lau she moved to the newly established town of Klemme in 1895, where her father operated the first store in the town.
On August 9, 1916 Martha Lau and Clark Bredbenner were united in marriage. They were the parents of one daughter, Novella. Their home was the former house of the Klemme family, for whom the town had been named. Martha was always very interested in the history of the town and especially that of her house. She participated in community life by serving as a clerk in the J. W. Waterman General Store, the John Day Store, the Klemme Post Office, and the Thada Store.
She became a member of the German Methodist Church in 1903, and her interests and services in the church were many throughout her life. She served faithfully as Sunday School secretary for thirty-six years with a record of thirteen years of perfect attendance. For the past fifteen years she has served as local secretary of Goodwill Industries. She was a charter member of the Woman's Society of Christian Service and was made a life member in 1955. She was also a charter member of the Legion Auxiliary.
She was truly a wonderful mother, devoted to her daughter. She supplied much encouragement and assistance to Novella and greatly enjoyed their summer travels together. She also was interested in her many nieces and nephews, the annual Christian Lau reunion of which she was secretary twenty years, her flower garden, scrapbooks, and other numerous hobbies.
February 22, 1962 she suffered a sudden heart attack and passed away at the Britt Hospital. She reached the age of 76 years, 9 months, and 14 days. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clark, who died in 1928, and a sister, Mamie, who died in 1906.
Surviving besides her daughter, Novella, who is a teacher in the Des Moines Public Schools, are four sisters, Esther (Mrs. Steve Day) of Hubbard, Oregon; Lillie (Mrs. Albert Koerner), Nellie (Mrs. Elmer Arnold), Leona Lau, all of Klemme, and five brothers, Will of Garner, George, Wesley, Lloyd, and Erwin of Klemme.
