Jasper N. Smith rites held Saturday

Funeral services for Jasper N. Smith of Forest City were held Saturday at Calvary Baptist church. The Rev. Douglas Domokos officiated.

Greg Hall and Floyd Jefson sang two duets for the service and Mrs. Ralph Johnson was organist. Casket bearers were Marvin Anderson, Harvey Johnson, Ralph Johnson, Virgil Schlawin, LeRoy Thompson and Terry Thompson. Burial was in Madison Township cemetery with the Petersen Funeral home in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Smith, 88, died Sept. 18 at the Forest City hospital.

Jasper N. Smith, the son of William W. and Louisa Smith, was born Aug. 23, 1897, in Kansas City, Mo. During most of his adult life, he lived in Clinton where he was employed by the Pillsbury Company.

From Aug. 29, 1942, to March 8, 1943, he served in the United States Army, stationed with the 903rd Field Artillery Battalion in Camp Butner, N. Car. He was married to Gertrude Anderson July 31, 1943. She died in 1964.

Nov. 4, 1971, he was married to Hazel Peters Holcomb. The couple lived in Forest City since that time and attended Calvary Baptist church.

Survivors include his wife, Hazel; and six step-daughters, Mrs. Gary (Diane) Smidt and Mrs. William (Mildred) Quick of Clinton, Mrs. Roy (Geneva) Merchant, Mrs. Orville (Fern) Johnson and Mrs. Ralph (Myrna) Oudekerk, all of Forest City, and Mrs. Gordon (Ila Jean) Oudekerk of Dougherty.

Also surviving are a sister, Mrs. Sarah Castle of Charles City; 24 step-grandchildren; and many step-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Gertrude, five brothers, two sisters, two step-daughters, Mavis Dean and Sharon Thompson, and two step-sons, Milo and Kenneth Holcomb.
