Marie Boehnke
1905-1996

Services for Marie Boehnke, 90, of Clear Lake, who died Thursday, Nov. 7, 1996, at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East in Mason City, were held Saturday, Nov. 9, 11 a.m., at St. John's Lutheran Church northeast of Garner with Rev. Carl Hedberg as officiant.

Mrs. Louise Boehnke served as organist. Ushers were Philip C. Boehnke and Robert Olson.

Casket bearers were Edward Kotz Jr., Lynn Kelck, Linda Schwickerath, Tracie Mitchell, Terry Boehnke and Phillip L. Boehnke.

Burial was at St. John's Lutheran Cemetery northeast of Garner. Visitation was held at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel in Garner.

Marie Henrietta Boehnke, the fourth of 10 children of L.H. and Anna (Schultz) Hinrichs, was born December 2, 1905, on the family farm near Guernsey. She was baptized January 1, 1906, and confirmed March 28, 1920 at St. John's Lutheran Church near Victor. She attended Lutheran schools at Victor and rural Garner and high school at Guernsey. At the age of 10 she traveled by train to Mason City to help her uncle and aunt, Will and Dora Hinrichs of Ventura, with their growing family of seven boys.

November 24, 1925, she married Theodore "Ted" Gustav Boehnke at St. John's Lutheran Church in Victor. They farmed northwest of Ventura until 1964 when they retired from farming and moved into Clear Lake. They operated the Barrel Drive In at West Union from 1966 to 1971.

Marie and Ted enjoyed entertaining their family and many friends. Her favorite pastimes were sewing, playing cards, growing flowers, doing crossword and jigsaw puzzles and watching ball games on television.

She was a faithful member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Ladies Aid and L.W.M.L.

She is survived by her daughter, Lois Kotz of Clear Lake; her son, Gordon Boehnke and his wife, Sally of Ventura; her son-in-law, Leonard "Pat" Kelck of Mason City; six grandchildren, Edward Kotz Jr. and his wife, Kandi of Clear Lake, Lynn Kelck and his wife, Beverly of West Union, Linda Schwickerath and her husband, Lynn of New Hampton, Tracie Mitchell and her husband, Kenneth of Cheney, KS, Terry Boehnke and his wife, Vickie of Ventura and Phillip L. Boehnke and his wife, Tina of Garner; 12 great-grandchildren, Bradley and Brent Schwickerath, Kellie and Krista Kelck, Julia and Wesley Kotz, Robin Weidner and her husband, Joel, Amy Calhoun, Anne Mitchell, Jessica Boehnke and James and Theodore Boehnke; a great-great-grandson, David Weidner; a brother, Louis Hinrichs and his wife, Wanda of Sacramento, CA; two sisters, Martha Borcherding of Latimer and Anna Woehr of Marengo; seven sisters-in-law, Marie Hinrichs of Portland, OR, Beatta Hinrichs of Guernsey, Jane Hinrichs of Port Angeles, WA, Esther Hinrichs of Amana, Olga Ollenburg of Garner, Martha Jass of Ventura and Ruth Ollenburg of Garner; and many nephews, nieces, cousins and friends, and Edward and Bernadine Kotz of Clear Lake, Lester and Sue Davis of Johnston, Tillie Hinrichs of Garner and Phyllis Ferrier of Clear Lake.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ted Boehnke, June 20, 1988; her daughter, Violet Marie Kelck, April 17, 1985; an infant son, Theodore Boehnke; her parents; four brothers and two sisters, Rev. Everard Hinrichs, Pauline Berry, Clark Hinrichs, Florence Krause, Howard Hinrichs and Gordon Hinrichs; and eight brothers-in-law and two sisters-in-law, George Berry, Rev. Arthur Krause, Lester Borcherding, Carl Floerchinger, Herman Pueggel, Emil Ollenburg, Ed Jass, Herbert Ollenburg, Esther Hinrichs and Emma Pueggel.
