Woden man dies in Florida

Funeral services for Clarence Albert Bird, 75, widely known in Hancock county, and a resident of Woden were held Tuesday at the United Methodist church in Woden with the Rev. Michael Thompson officiating, with military rites by the American Legion. Soloist was Rev. Thompson and Mrs. Dale Rittenhouse was the organist.

Mr. Bird died Feb. 18 at a Clearwater, Fla. hospital following surgery. He had been in failing health for some time. Mr. and Mrs. Bird have been spending the winter months at Largo, Fla., for a number of years.

He was born Feb. 23, 1895, near Woden where he grew to manhood. He enlisted in the U. S. Army during World War I and served with the medics. On Jan. 21, 1920, he was discharged at Fort Sheridan, Ill. He was a charter member of the Legion in Woden, being a member for 51 years.

On Sept. 1, 1927, he was united in marriage to Mina Ward. They farmed in the Woden area for many years before moving to Woden in 1949. Mr. Bird served several terms of office on the Hancock county Board of Supervisors until his retirement. He also served on the AAA Committee for many years.

Surviving are his wife; a daughter, Mrs. Richard (Irma) McVey of Iowa City; three sons, Charles of Pittsburgh, Penn., Robert of Garwin, and Dale of McHenry, Ill.; five grandchildren and two sisters, Mrs. Hans (Hannah) Smith of Woden and Mrs. Clifford (Trilby) Butts of Tampa, Fla., and a brother John Bird of Tampa.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Harry Bird, and two sisters, Mrs. Russel (Etta) Kopf and Mrs. Don (Blanche) Wilson.

A previous service was held at Feaster Memorial home in Largo Feb 19. Burial was in Bingham township cemetery near Woden.
