1913-1997Services for John Tonyes Bergman, 83, Britt, who died Tuesday, May 6, 1997, at the Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt, were held Friday, May 9, 10 a.m., at Bethel Baptist Church in Britt with Rev. D. Stephen Kowbel officiating.
Music was provided by organist, Judy Eden, who accompanied a duet of Vana Kruger and Deb Eden, and congregational hymns. Ushers were Kent Eden, Kurt Eden and Kevin Kruger.
Casket bearers Donald Robinson, David Bergman, Robert Lewerke, Dean Lewerke, Greg Anderson and Gary Forshee.
Burial was at Evergreen Cemetery Britt, with Ewing Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
John Tonyes Bergman, the son of Berend and Anna Pearson Bergman, was born September 26, 1913, in Alexander. As a young man, he moved with his parents to the Britt area. He attended country school in the area.
September 14, 1937, he married Ella Lewerke at the Britt Baptist Church Parsonage. The couple had a truck farm between Hayfield and Crystal Lake. During World War II John worked for the government doing construction work in Nebraska. In 1957, the couple moved to Britt where John worked for the city, retiring in 1979.
John was a member of the Baptist Church, in 1952 he accepted Christ as his personal Savior. He was a deacon of the church for several years. John enjoyed spending time with his family. He also liked to go fishing, do yard work and woodwork.
He is survived by his wife, Ella; his daughter, Judy Oudekerk and her husband, Robert of Britt; his sisters, Grace Nelson of Britt, and Beulah Riege and her husband, Ralph of North Hollywood, CA; a brother, Bennie Bergman of Des Moines; and a sister-in-law, Helen Bergman of Britt.
John was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Pearl Robinson and infant sister, Deliah; and two brothers, Charlie and Henry.
