Rites for Berniece Benson held Friday afternoon

Last rites for Mrs. Berniece Benson, 61, who died July 17 at Forest City municipal hospital, were held at 2 p.m. Friday at United Methodist church. The Rev. B. Gordon Packard officiated, and burial was in Madison township cemetery.

Casket bearers were Doris Cosgriff, Mrs. Pearl Golbuff, Mrs. Myrtle Austin, Mrs. Burlette Huso, Mrs. Peggy Ouverson and Mrs. Anna Peterson. Honorary bearers were Mrs. Viola Brown, Mrs. Viola Buckley, Mrs. Lois Haaland, Mrs. Hazel Miller, Mrs. Jerry Sorenson and Mrs. Alpha Stevens. The Olson-Petersen funeral home was in charge of arrangements.

A daughter of Clifford and Belle McFarland, Mrs. Benson was born May 31, 1913, at Ipava, Ill. As a child, she moved with her family to the Burlington area, having lived earlier in Florida.

She was married to Burtis E. Benson Oct. 21, 1933, in Albert Lea, Minn., and they established their home on a farm near Crystal Lake.

In March, 1943, the couple moved to Forest City. She began work at Forest City municipal hospital in 1949, and continued there until illness forced her to retire.

Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Carlyle (Dixie) Rauk and Mrs. Dennis (Patricia) Strommen, both of Forest City; a brother, Clifford McFarland of Clear Lake; two sisters, Mrs. Paul (Pauline) Satur of Sea Ranch, Calif., and Mrs. Millard (Marie) Brooks of Garner; and seven grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, who died Jan. 24, 1968.
