Former resident died in Clear Lake

Former Forest City area resident, Walter "Pat" Bergman, 75, died Friday at his home in Clear Lake.

Funeral services for Mr. Bergman were conducted Monday at Evangelical Free church in Clear Lake. The Rev. Kent Wagner officiated.

Doris Carlson, soloist, was accompanied Sally Frampton, organist. Casket bearers were Dennis Carlson, Dean Carlson, Dale Carlson, Lyle Etzen, Michael Etzen, Scott Hakes, Jaime Hakes, Gail Hakes, Luke Sikora, Steve Snow and Mark Weiland. Burial was in Madison Township cemetery in Forest City.

Walter Bergman was born June 14, 1908, in Brook Park, Minn., to Henry and Mary Schmid Berman. At an early age he moved with his parents to the Forest City area and later worked as a farmhand in the area.

He was married to Gladys Etzen in 1942 and they lived near Crystal Lake. She died in 1968. In the early 1950's Bergman worked for Charles Hall as a farmhand in the Mason City area.

He was married to Margaret Palmer Hakes Dec. 8, 1972, in Cedar Rapids. They lived in the Mason City and Clear Lake areas.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret; a son, Jerry Bergman of Garner; four step-sons, Harold Hakes of Clear Lake, Robert Hakes of Tampa, Fla., Vance Hakes of Antigo, Wis., and Bruce Hakes of West Hollywood, Calif.; and six step-daughters, Mrs. Harlan (Gayle) Snow, Mrs. James (Kathy) Holck and Mrs. Michael (Ramona) Bendickson, all of Clear Lake, Mrs. Carroll (Beverly) Carlson of Owatonna, Minn., Mrs. E. P. (Juanita) Sikora of Antigo, Wis., and Mrs. Jerry (Virginia) Weiland of Cedar Rapids.

Also surviving were five sisters, Mrs. Martha Riggle, Mrs. Earl (Florence) Knapper and Mrs. Walter (Marie) Kingsbury, all of Crystal Lake, Mrs. Louise Meyer of Medford, Minn., and Mrs. Ed (Esther) Eller of Roland; 22 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Gladys, a sister, Ethel Homes, and a brother, Melvin Bergman.
