Death of Mr. Mudgett

William H. Mudgett died at his home in this city last Thursday evening at 8 o’clock after a serious illness of several months, the cause of his death being creeping paralysis.

William H. Mudgett was born in McHenry County, Illinois, on May 17, 1844. In 1867 he was married to Miss Emma Claxton. They resided in Illinois until 1889, when he came to Hancock County, which has since been their home; much of that time Mr. Mudgett was in business in Britt. The ailment which caused his death began to make its appearance more than a year ago, but did not seem serious until about last October, when he became helpless. He was taken to Chicago last fall with the hope that he could get some relief from the specialists of that city, but they could not give him any encouragement and he returned home. Since last November he has been confined to his bed perfectly helpless, growing weaker and suffering great agony until death relieved him.

He leaves to mourn for him, besides his wife, two sons and three daughters, Earl, who resides at Granville, North Dakota; Victor, of Chicago; Mrs. Minnie Groom, Sultan, Washington; Amy and Floy, who reside at home.

The funeral services were held on Sunday afternoon at the Methodist Church, Rev. Cole officiating.

Mr. Mudgett was a soldier in the War of the Rebellion, enlisting in 1861 in the 37th Illinois Regiment, serving through the war and spent six months after it closed guarding government property. He was a member of the G. A. R., who attended his funeral in a body and performed the sad rites at the grave. He was also a member of the Odd Fellows Fraternity and the Britt lodge attended in a body, as also did the Woman’s Relief Corps.

The funeral was largely attended and the floral offerings were numerous and beautiful.
