Soldier of Civil War Answers Taps

Reuben Lacock Fought In Battle of Bentonville, Marched With Sherman.

Dropped Dead from Heart Disease at Home of Son on Friday Morning

The ranks of the “Boys in Blue” have been entered again and this time Reuben Lacock has answered taps and has gone to that country from which no traveler returns. He was found dead in the coal shed of his son, Bruce, Friday morning. He left the house to get a hod of coal and when he did not return Mr. Bruce Lacock went to look for him and found him lying dead. Heart disease, from which he had suffered a long time is attributed to the cause of death.

Reuben Lacock was born in Ripley County, Indiana, Feb 7, 1842. At death he had attained the age of 84 years, 11 months and 7 days. In 1854 he came with his parents to Lincoln Township, Clinton County, Iowa. They drove through in covered wagons following the trail of the numerous pioneers who had gone before them. Ten years later, in September 1864, he enlisted in the Union army and was immediately sent into service. He fought at the Battle of Bentonville and many skirmishes and marched with Sherman’s victorious army from Atlanta, Georgia to the sea.

He was married December 16, 1875, to Electa Keturah Mead. They lived together a little more than fifty years, and until the death of Mrs. Lacock ten months ago. Two sons survive him, Warren Bruce of Britt and Claude Laverne, of New Raymer, Colorado. There are also several grand children and other relatives.

He early in life joined the Methodist Episcopal Church and was a lover of the church all his life. The funeral was held from the local church Sunday afternoon. Rev. J. D. Wolcott in charge. Members of the G. A. R. and American Legion attended the funeral in a body. Comrade Charles Miller paid a tribute to his comrade. Burial was in Evergreen Cemetery, Britt.
