William Henry Baker was born at Honesdale, Pa., July 26, 1843, and died at Britt, Iowa, Feb 1, 1898. While still very young he moved to Wisconsin with his parents. He served three years during the War of the Rebellion, as a member of Co. B, 30th Regiment, Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry.

He was married Jan 20, 1869, to Miss Mary Richards. Ten children were born to them, seven of which are still living. March 19, 1887 he moved to Britt, where he lived until his death. In early youth he was converted and united with the Methodist Episcopal Church. He was a faithful, earnest, consistent Christian, loved by his associates in the church, and honored by them for years with some of its most important officers. For a number of years he was an exhorter and at this death was a trustee, and secretary of the Board of Trustees.

When it was thought that the close of this life was drawing near, he felt that he was ready for the next, and rejoiced that he had made his preparation when in health and strength. The burden of his thought during his last days was that others would make the same preparation before they come to their final sickness, and that his friends might be saved. As a citizen, none stood higher in the respect of the community than did he. His strict honesty, great liberality, thoughtfulness of others, and genial manner made his acquaintances. Kind, loving and indulgent in the home, his wife and children were bound to him by cords of strongest affection.

Besides his wife and children, his aged mother, recently bereaved of her husband, and ten brothers and sisters remain to mourn his loss.

Funeral services were held at the M. E. Church, Thursday, Feb 3, at 2 p.m. conducted by his pastor, a large concourse being present to pay their last respect to his memory.

The interment was in Evergreen Cemetery. The family have the sympathy of the entire community in their bereavement.
