Services for Mrs. Clara Smith, 90, of Woden, who died Sunday, April 23, 1989 at Americana Healthcare Center in Mason City, were held 10:30 a.m., Thursday, April 27, 1989 at the United Methodist Church in Woden with Rev. Scott Woeste as officiant.

Mrs. Dean Cataldo served as organist and soloist. Larry Wood served as an usher.

Casket bearer were Kenneth Blakley, Clavin Kurtzleben, Bryon Kurtzleben, Allan Mays, Dennis Gerdes and Fred Hugo.

Burial was in Bingham Township Cemetery in Woden. Visitation was held at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel in Woden.

Mrs. Clara Smith was born November 12, 1898 near Zalma, MO to Charley and Louisa (Frye) Payne. She attended the rural schools in both Missouri and Iowa.

January 1, 1920, she was married to Claus F. Smith at Woden. They farmed east of Woden, until 1950, when they moved into town. Clara was head cook at the Woden-Crystal Lake School in Woden for 23 years; retiring in 1974. After her husband's death, November 9, 1970, she continued to live in Woden. As the result of a stroke in May of 1987, Clara moved to a nursing home in Mason City. She especially enjoyed cooking and flower gardening.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Woden, the Woden Legion Auxiliary and Woden Senior Citizens.

She is survived by her son, Elmer and his wife, Pearl, of McAllen, TX; five sisters, Mrs. Lillie Pihl of Tracy, MN, Mrs. Edna Wagner of Richardson, TX, Mrs. Nellie Barta of Mason City, Mrs. Bertha Fisher of Lime Springs and Mrs. Ruby Holder of Mason City; and a sister-in-law, Mrs. Laura Payne of Fremont, CA.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Claus Smith; her parents; and five brothers, Ernest Payne, Elmer Payne, Jennings Payne, Freman Payne and Jesse Payne, an infant brother.
