Former businessman died Tuesday p.m.

Retired former Forest City businessman, Edward Fredrick Christ, died Tuesday afternoon at Forest City community hospital after a lingering illness. He was 84 years old.

Mr. and Mrs. Christ and their family moved to Forest City in 1937 where he owned and operated the Gamble store for 35 years until he retired in 1972.

Mr. Christ was an active member of the Senior Citizens Kum-Along club and had served as its president. Over the years he was also a member of the Forest City Chamber of Commerce, Lions club and served on the city council.

He also shared in the activities of Immanuel Lutheran church where he had been secretary-treasurer of the congregation and a Sunday school teacher.

The son of August and Caroline Feukenberger Christ, he was born Jan. 13, 1898, at his parent's farm near Lakota. After graduating from Lakota high school, he attended Phalen Lutheran Seminary in St. Paul for three years, then was graduated from Cedar Rapids Business college in 1918.

He joined the staff of the Farmers Savings Bank at Ledyard and became its cashier. In 1932 the bank merged with the State Bank of Ledyard and he continued with the merged bank. Later he went to work for the state banking department and was in charge of the receivership's of banks at Panora, Orient and Greenfield before coming to Forest City.

Mr. Christ married Edith Gabel at Ledyard Aug. 27, 1922. They are parents of two daughters.

Survivors include his wife, Edith; two daughters, Mrs. Erwin (Vivian) Foster and Mrs. Vincent (Eunice) Finer, both of Forest City; five grandchildren, six great grandchildren, a sister, Mrs. Kate Gelhaus of Hubbard, and a sister-in-law, Mrs. Victoria Christ of Wells.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, August, and two sisters, Mrs. Fred (Emma) Mabus and Mrs. August (Pauline) Klocke.

Funeral service for Mr. Christ will be held at 2 o'clock Friday afternoon at Immanuel Lutheran church with the Rev. Ole Winter and the Rev. John Hieronymus officiating. Norma Boomgarden will be organist. Mr. and Mrs. Don Meyer will sing.

Honorary pall bearers will be Gerrish Severson, Kalmer Johnson, Raymond Morem, Floyd Danielson, Harry Cribbs, Frank Ransom, Donald Sargent, Donald Clauson, Ralph Guild and Philip M. Hansen.

Active casket bearers will be Larry Foster, Steven Finer, Roy Siple, Mark Brock, David Reineke and Keith Klinksiek.

Burial will be in Madison Township cemetery. The Petersen funeral home is in charge of arrangements.
