Mrs. Edgar C. Howes, Formerly Ellington Twp. Laid to Rest

Was a sister of Mrs. S. P. Steeper and sister-in-law of Dave Howes

Ellington township - Funeral services for Mrs. Edgar C. Howes were held at Center school house, Ellington township, Friday in charge of the Rev. H. O. Ward. Burial was made in Ellington cemetery. Deceased was a sister of Mrs. S. P. Streeper and a sister-in-law of Dave Howes. For many years she was a resident of Ellington township.

Julia Jane Smith was born Sept. 23, 1851, in Conewango, Cattaroggus county, New York. She was united in marriage with Edgar C. Howes May 18, 1871, at Glenwood, Winneshiek county, Iowa. To this union three children were born, Julia, Will and Newton.

Mr. Howes was a member of Company H of the New York volunteers serving in the Civil was and received honorable discharge at the close of the war. He was a member of Haydon post No. 151 of the Iowa Dept. of the Grand Army of the Republic. He passed away Nov. 11, 1902.

Mrs. Howes was living at Andrews, Ind., with her son, Newton, at the time of her death which occurred Jan. 24, 1933.

She leaves to mourn her departure from this earthly life one daughter, Julia and two sons, Will of Montana and Newton of Andrews, Ind.; two sisters, Mrs. S. P. Streeper of Ellington township; Mrs. Ball of St. Paul, Minn., and one brother, Will Smith of Montana.

Deceased joined the Methodist church in 1907 at Ellington and her membership was later transferred to Forest City.

She has been in failing health of some time and bed fast for some time. She departed this life Tuesday, Jan. 24, at the age of 81 years, 4 months and one day.
