Israel K. Smith was born in the state of New York, Dec. 2, 1833, and died April 2, 1918, age 84 years and 5 months.

The deceased was united in marriage to Miss Rebekah J. Gillam on the 17th day of May 1857; to this union nine children were born, six of whom are still living. On July 30, 1902, after being bereft of his wife, he was united in marriage to Mrs. Melinda S. Bowers, who is left to mourn his loss.

Mr. Smith enlisted November 18, 1863, in Co. G. Iowa Vol. Inf., and saw service in the south, being taken prisoner and confined for some time in a southern prison camp. While there he contracted rheumatism which incapacitated him for further duty, and he was mustered out in St. Louis, Mo.

A number of years ago Mr. Smith united with the Baptist church in Michigan, and has always lived a devoted Christian life. Of late years he has worshiped with Mrs. Smith at the Congregational church.
