Nathan Lewis was born at Gibson, Susquahanna county, Penn., Dec. 14, 1832, and died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. H. T. Ellsworth, July 19, 1922, at the age of 89 years, 7 months and 5 days. He was married to Rhoda C. Carpenter of Gibson, Pa. January 9, 1851, and to this union were born eight children, Mrs. H. T. Ellsworth of Forest City, Iowa; Mrs. W. S. Blackwell of Golfield, Iowa; Mrs. Albert Ames of Morris Ill.; J. M. Lewis of Gibson, Pa.; A. D. Lewis of Velva, N. D., and Mrs. O. K. Maben of Forest City, Iowa. Wesley Lewis and an infant son and his wife having preceded him to the Great Beyond.

The deceased came to Iowa in 1888,and has even since resided here.

His genial disposition endeared him to a host of friends, who join in deepest sympathy with the bereaved ones.

He enlisted in company "F" of the 141 Reg. of Infantry, Pa Volunteers, Aug. 8, 1862,and served three years; and during the service he contracted ailments which were the immediate cause of his death. He was ever a patient, even cheerful sufferer, and expressed a firm belief in an all wise kind and loving Heavenly Father; and during the last few weeks of his illness expressed his faith in Christ as the Redeemer of mankind.

There are left to mourn his departure, six children, thirteen grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren and an aged sister.

"How splendid to see a man coming down to the end of a long life like a shock of ripe corn awaiting the hand of the Great Husbandman, with no fear, ready to go. Having been a soldier, he fought his fight for his country and then come like Paul to fight the good fight of faith".

Funeral services were held at the Ellsworth home, Friday afternoon at 2:00, Rev. J. D. Wolcott of the M. E. church officiating.

A quartet consisting of Mrs. Busch, Miss Anna Butcher, Emory Oleson and W. J. Brooker sang very beautifully several songs.

Interment was made in the Madison township cemetery, south of town.
