James Lackore Died From Heart Failure Last Friday Afternoon

Live In County Fifty Years

Was One of Oldest Settlers in County, Came to Forest City in 1856. Built First Frame House in City. Moved to Hancock County in 1864

James Lackore, one of the earliest settlers of this county died very suddenly at his home in Madison township about two miles east of Forest City on last Friday afternoon, from the effects of heart disease, at the age of 72 years.

Mr. Lackore had been in his usual health nearly all day and about two o'clock he went to the barn to look after some of the horses that were running loose in the yard. He returned to the house in just a few minutes and told his wife that he was not feeling well that he was feeling sort of numb and that he would lie on the bed awhile. His wife went into the bedroom with him, rubbing his arms and limbs for a few minutes when he told her that he was feeling lots better, his wife getting up and going out of the room sat down just outside, only a short distance from the bed. She heard him breathing heavily and asked the little boy who was at home at the time to see of papa was asleep, he went to the room and called to his mother "no, his face is all black." Mrs. Lackore hastened to his side and found that he had passed away.

James Lackore was born in Jefferson county, New York, Nov 1, 1835. In 1851 he moved with his parents to Illinois, where they lived for five years coming from there to Forest City, being among the earliest pioneers of the county. He lived in Forest City for about five years, erecting the first frame house ever built in this city, his father William Lackore having built a frame barn the summer before. He then built a house on his farm in Madison township and removed thereon in 1864 shortly after his first marriage. He was the father of thirteen children, seven by his first wife and six by the second. He was married the second time to Mrs. Elizabeth Schwichtenberg on Nov. 21, 1879.

Those of his family who are living are: Rosina (Mrs. Deitz), William, Cora (Mrs. Steinica), Peter, John, Arthur, Ervin, Oscar, Nettie (Mrs. Arbuckle), Nellie and Truman, all of whom attended the funeral with exception of John and William. The funeral was held on Monday afternoon from the M. E. church in this city, the remains being laid to rest in the Madison cemetery south of town.
