CHASE

Leonard William Chase was born Aug. 29, 1841 in Jefferson County, N. Y. In 1862 he heard the call of his country and leaving all behind he enlisted in his country's service and after faithful, efficient work was honorably discharged June 23, 1865. In 1871 he moved to Hancock Co. Iowa. He proved himself to be an industrious farmer and a good citizen. For thirty-one years he assisted in building up the surrounding country.

He married after he came back from the war. When a young man he united with the M.E. Church.

At the age of 61 years 11 months and 9 days he obeyed the summons to leave this world and enter the eternal. He leaves a wife who mourns a faithful husband and six children who suffer the loss of a loving and kind father.

Funeral services were conducted on the lawn in front of the home 4 1/2 miles south of town by Rev. G. F. Whitfield. A large gathering gave evidence of sympathy and showed their esteem for the departed friend and neighbor. The choir rendered sweet music and the comrades in arms acted as pall bearers.
