Tena (Brouwer) Cook, 97 of Britt, formerly of Kanawha passed away Wednesday, December 5, 2018 at Westview Care Center in Britt.
Funeral services for Tena Cook will be held on Monday, December 10, 2018 at 10:30 AM at the United Methodist Church, 707 4th Street Southwest in Britt, with Pastor Robert Dodge officiating. Burial will be at Evergreen Cemetery in Britt.
Visitation for Tena will be held on Sunday, December 9, 2018 from 2:00 – 4:00 PM at Ewing Funeral Chapel, 178 Center Street West in Britt and one hour prior to services on Monday at the church.
Tena, the daughter of John and Hanna (Sweers) Brouwer was born May 27, 1921 in Britt, Iowa. She grew up on the family farm west of Britt and was raised and educated in the Britt area.
Tena was united in marriage to Loren Cook on February 11, 1942 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. The couple made their home on a farm southwest of Kanawha for 26 years, where they raised their family. They later moved to Kanawha in 1973.
Tena worked alongside Loren with the farm work and worked at the café in Kanawha for more than 30 years. In her retirement, she helped with congregate meals in Kanawha.
Family was at the center of Tena’s life. They enjoyed camping and traveled out west a few times, but Tena was always glad to return home. She and Loren enjoyed square dancing and she loved classic country music.
Tena was a longtime member of the Kanawha United Methodist Church where she had previously served on worship committee. She later joined the Britt United Methodist Church.
Tena is survived by her children, Virginia (Dick) Wolf of Garner, Tom Cook of Greenbrier, Arkansas and Larry (Kristine) Cook of Arvada, Colorado; her grandchildren Joey Cook, Angie (Jason ) Kunz, Michelle (Tom) Heron, Brian (Kelly) Cook, Ashley Cook and Cory Cook; great-grandchildren William, Hanna, Johnathan, Mitchell, Katelyn, Jacob and Brody; sisters Esther Rapp of Garner, Helen Shipp of Waterloo, Norma (Kay) Schuver of Bemidji, Minnesota and brother John Brouwer of Cedar Falls; along with numerous nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.
Tena was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Loren in 1991, sister Cornelia Scheibel, and brothers Jake Brouwer, Harold “Bud” Brouwer and Phillip Brouwer.
