Saturday night the grim messenger stole quietly in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Wieland, northeast of town, while they slept and took from it the aged father, John Wieland, who had been there from Britt for about a month visiting his son and family. Saturday he had been in the field with the men where they were cutting oats and retired early only complaining of a slight headache. Sunday morning when Mrs. Wieland went to call him at seven o'clock she found him lying as if sleeping, with the covers up about him, but lifeless. Dr. Reeve was hastily summoned and it was thought he must have slept away very soon after retiring. He had reached the age of 84 years, 10 months and 2 days, but was hale and hearty and in possession of all his faculties and sudden death was a great shock to the family. His wife preceded him in death over 30 years ago and for the last 22 years he has lived among his children, who are John, Benjamin, George and Anton Wieland, Mrs. Annie Osterkamp and Mrs. Cornelia Swears, all living at Britt and Richard of this place, while John Wieland is a cousin. Short funeral services conducted by Rev. Mr. Shafer of Waterloo were held at the home of the son at 7:30 Monday night and Tuesday morning the remains were taken on the morning train to Britt where the funeral was held Wednesday morning. The relatives have the sympathy of all in their sudden bereavement.
