Phylida K. Gorman, 71, of Garner, died Monday, January 21, 2002, at her home following a strong fight with cancer.

Her memorial service was held Thursday, January 24, at the St. Boniface Catholic Church in Garner with Msgr. Joseph J. Slepicka officiating. Music was provided by organist, Carolyn Kumsher who accompanied the church choir. Ushers were Robert Kral and Lawrence Engstler.

Honorary bearers were Eleanor Larkin, Jean Auchampach, Charlene East, Marian Blank, Nancy Tammen, Catherine Mattis, Helen Winter, Sue Whitehurst and Marie Pattison. Burial will be at a later date in the Crystal Township Cemetery in Crystal Lake. The Cataldo Funeral Home of Garner was in charge of the arrangements.

Phylida Kathryn Gorman, the daughter of Melvern and Emma (Nissen) Scanlan, was born March 15, 1930 at Forest City. She grew up in the Crystal Lake area and graduated from the Crystal Lake High School in 1947. She attended the La James Beauty School in Mason City. On October 16, 1949, she was united in marriage to Walter Gorman. They made their home in Algona, Ventura and Garner for the past 42 years. Mrs. Gorman was employed at Happy ARC as a bus driver, E.F. Johnson in Garner and Rockwell International in Mason City where she retired in 1993.

She loved being a mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She enjoyed playing cards with family and her special friends, her dog Chloe, quilting, knitting, sporting events and her yearly trips to San Antonio to visit her daughter, Toni. She was a member of the St. Boniface Catholic Church.

Survivors include her husband, Walter; three children, Gena Greiman and her husband, Fred of Garner, Pat Gorman and his wife, Sharon of Garner and Toni Gorman of San Antonio, Texas; eight grandchildren, Andrea Greiman of Garner, Brook Stokes and her husband, Charlie of Austin, Texas, Melissa Gorman of Garner, Gail Gouge and her husband, Jeremy of Garner, Jamie Greiman of Ames, Luke Greiman of Garner, Nicole Gorman of Klemme and Kate Gorman of Garner; three great-grandchildren, Taylor Hubbard, Kaden Greiman, Mykenzie Darg, all of Garner; a great-grandchild, baby Gouge, due in July.

Also surviving are two sisters-in-law, Ruth Thilges and Kathryn Gorman both of California; two nieces; a nephew; and several great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Ivan and Pat Scanlan; a sister-in-law, Rosie Scanlan; a brother-in-law, Bill Thilges; and a niece, Darcy Scanlan.
