Oscar Garten [Gartin] Dies Of Self Inflected Gun Shot Wound

Was Goodell business man several years before going to Belmond.

Special to Garner Leader and Signal

Goodell - Another bit of sad news reached this locality Tuesday of the past week when it was learned that Oscar Garten [Gartin] had died suddenly at his home in Belmond at 10:30 that morning.

Mr. and Mrs. Garten had been in the basement doing some canning - - - to bring in more vegetables and just as she got outside the door heard a shot. Rushing to the basement she found her husband had died instantly from a self inflected wound with a revolver bullet. The Wright county sheriff and coroner pronounced the case suicide.

Oscar H. Garten was born Dec. 22, 1853, and passed away Sept. 21, 1943, at the age of 89 years.

When the Gartens were first married they owned and operated a farm west of here, which now is a part of the Ed Halfpop place. After quitting the farm Mr. Garten owned and operated the hardware and implement store here for several years, and after disposing of this business they moved to Belmond and have resided there for the past 30 years. He followed the carpenter trade for a few years and for many years was employed in the Klemme Furniture store there.

Mr. Garten had been in failing health the past few years. About two years ago a cancer developed on his hand and he spent many weeks in a hospital in Missouri and returned home pronounced cured. Lately the disease has returned and this made him despondent at times.

He was preceded in death by a sister and two brothers, Eugene and Herbert, the two latter former residents of Garner. He is survived by his wife and one daughter, Mrs. Henry Saatoff of Hampton.

Funeral services were held at the Congregational church in Belmond at 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon. Interment was at the Amsterdam cemetery.
