Mary Wichman Services Held

Mary L. Wichman passed away on Friday, December 25 in the Rock Rapids, Iowa hospital at the age of 87 years, 3 months and 3 days. Services were held in the Bohn Funeral home on Monday, December 28.

The Rev. Trevor Baskerville spoke the words of comfort. Veda Hindt Casjens sang the "Lord's Prayer" and "In my fathers house are many mansions". Floyd Casjens was the accompanist.

The pallbearers were F. W. Stieff, Curtis G. Riehm, Roy L. McMillin, C. N. Housh, A. E. Rasmussen and Paul Shurts.

Mary Lucy Prescott, daughter of Harriet Babcock and Charles Taylor Prescott, was born on September 22, 1866, the first white child born in the incorporated town of Cresco, Iowa. Most of Mrs. Wichman's early years were spent in Rockford, Iowa where her mother died when she was 11 years old. After that she spent time with different relatives including her uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. A. C. Ripley of Garner, with whom she was living when she met John E. Wichman, Garner attorney. They were married on November 15, 1888 in Garner, where they lived throughout their 40 years of married life.

They had three daughters, Margaret, who died at birth; Lois (Mrs. L. K. Fenlon) of Clinton, and Charlotte (Mrs. H. H. Hindt) of Rock Rapids.

Mr. Wichman died in a Rochester, Minn., hospital on March 28, 1929, Mrs. Wichman lived in Garner until 1944, and since then she divided her time between the homes of her two daughters. Besides her two daughters, she is survived by seven grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Mrs. Wichman was an active member of the Methodist church in Garner for more than 60 years. She was a charter member of the Ladies Progressive club and took part in civic and community affairs, she and her husband contributing much to the development and growth of Garner and community.

Interment was made at the Concord cemetery, Garner.
