Andrew Johnson Dies at Age 100; Buried at Goodell

Funeral services for A. A. Johnson, 100, were held Friday afternoon at the Kanawha Methodist church with Rev. Donald Samuelson officiating. Burial was in the family lot at Amsterdam cemetery, Goodell. Arthur and Harry Ruka were among the pallbearers.

Andrew Allison Johnson was born Jan. 16, 1858, near Iowa Falls and lived in that vicinity for many years. He was married there to Elizabeth Ott on Feb 16, 1884. A few years later they moved to a farm they purchased west of Goodell, which bordered on East Lake. This was their home until they retired and purchased a home in Kanawha.

Mrs. Johnson passed away several years ago and for the past few years Mr. Johnson has lived in the Good Samaritan Home at Mason City. Each year his children came to the home to honor his birthday.

On his 100th birthday they were there to celebrate with him and they cherish a picture taken of him holding his huge birthday cake with 100 candles.

Each year some of his children or grandchildren brought him to the local cemetery for Memorial Day services, and last May he was able to come, although very frail.

The past two months he failed steadily and became very ill on Tuesday of last week with pneumonia. He was taken at once to the Mercy hospital at Mason City, where he passed away soon after entering.

He leaves four children: Mrs. Henry (Flossie) Hanson of Kanawha, Mrs. Gus (Alice) Walskie of Ely, Minn., Ora of Goodell and Mrs. William (Ruth) Schreur of Britt; also 59 grandchildren and great grandchildren. His oldest child, a son, died before the Johnsons came to the Goodell vicinity.

Following the burial rites here, lunch was served to the family and friends in the EUB church basement.

Among those coming from a distance were children of the Ora Johnsons, who included Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Nelson of Plainfield, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Becker, who recently purchased a resort at Pequot, Minn., Mr. and Mrs. Earl VanBuskirk and children of Brownsdale, Minn., and Aaron Johnson of Mora, Minn., Mrs. James Hahn, who lives at Rankin, Tex., was unable to come.
