Rural Britt youth victim of accident
Britt - Steve H. Sankey, 18, Route 3, Britt, died Tuesday night of injuries he received in a car train crash about 8 p.m. Tuesday at the west Britt city limits.
According to the Iowa Highway Patrol, Sankey had been traveling east on Highway 18, then made a right hand turn into Britt.
The eastbound Milwaukee Road freight train was traveling 49 m.p.h., officials said, when it demolished the Sankey car. The car had been traveling approximately 15 m.p.h.
Engineer Humbert Coleman, Mason City, told officials he saw the car approaching, but apparently Sankey did not see the train. The railroad crossing is marked by crossbucks.
Sankey was thrown from the car. about 200 feet from the impact. He was taken to Hancock County Memorial Hospital and died enroute to Mercy Hospital in Mason City about 2 1/2 hours after the mishap.
Cause of death was a cerebral hemorrhage and multiple fractures, officials said.
Sankey was a senior at Britt High School.
He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Sankey; a sister, Elizabeth, and a brother, Scott, at home. Funeral arrangements are incomplete at Boughton Funeral Home, Britt
