Ex Postmaster At Ottosen Succumbs At 84

Funeral services for Grafton I. Purdy, 84, longtime Ottosen resident, were held in the Ottosen Presbyterian church on Monday, Feb. 25, with Rev. A. Ramirez of Pocohontas officiating. Burial was at Corwith.

Alfred Schultz was vocal accompanied by Mrs. Alfred Schultz. Floral arrangements were in charge of Mrs. Roy Telford and Mrs. Mike Coyle.

Casket bearers were Roy Telford, Virgil Tate, Ralph Gatton, Ralph Richards, Wilbur Johnson and Larry Johnson.

Grafton I. Purdy was born in Wapello county on Jan. 14, 1873, to Mynard and Susan Purdy. He grew to manhood in that community. He then went to Corwith where he farmed several years.

He married Emma Dennis Nov. 17, 1895, to whom were born three sons, two dying in infancy and one in 1942. The Purdys also adopted a daughter, who is now Mrs. Grace Price of Bell, Cal. Mrs. Purdy died in 1933.

In 1940 Mr. Purdy married Mrs. Anna Gatton of Humboldt.

Mr. Purdy was mail carrier seven years at Corwith, and the rest of his 26 years in that vicinity was spent on the farm.

He then moved to Arnold, Ia., where he conducted a store and was postmaster. In 1924 he moved to Ottosen where he conducted a store and was also postmaster until he retired in 1943.

He was a member of Ottosen Presbyterian church and was an elder for over 20 years.

Mr. Purdy died Feb. 20, after a month's illness.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, three sons, his parents, three brothers and five sisters.

He is survived by his wife, and daughter, Mrs. Grace Price.

Services Held At Ottosen For Grafton Purdy

Ottosen - Services for Grafton I. Purdy, 84, longtime Ottosen resident, were held in the Ottosen Presbyterian church last week Monday with Rev. A. Ramirez of Pocohontas officiating. Burial was at Corwith. Arrangements were made by the Lindhart Funeral Home of Humboldt.

Alfred Schultz was soloist accompanied by Mrs. Alfred Schultz. Floral arrangements were in charge of Mrs. Roy Telford and Mrs. Mike Coyle. Deanne Telford and LeRoy Worby were ushers. Casket bearers were Roy Telford, Virgil Tate, Ralph Gatton, Ralph Richards, Wilbur Johnson and Larry Johnson.

When he lived at Corwith, he joined the Baptist church. After moving to Ottosen he joined the Presbyterian church when it was reorganized. He was an Elder in this church over 20 years.

He and wife, Emma, adopted a daughter in 1902. His wife died in 1933. In 1940 he married Mrs. Anna Gatton of Humboldt.

Mr. Prudy died at Skaugstad Convalescent Home Feb. 20, after a month's illness due to a fall.
