Fred Weiss, 1920-2005

Fred Weiss, 84, of Mason City, formerly of Garner, died on Thursday, January 6, 2005, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Funeral services were held on Monday, January 10, at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Mason City. The Rev. Mark Lavrenz officiated. Interment was in the Concord Cemetery, Garner, with military honors conducted by members of the Garner Veteran Ceremonial Unit. Memorials may be directed to the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Mason City and the Hospice of North Iowa.

Fred Weiss was born on September 29, 1920 in Selby, South Dakota. He was the son of Gust and Katie (Riddle) Weiss. Fred served in the United States Army in the Pacific Theatre during World War II.

On January 14, 1945, he was united in marriage to Vera (Woiwod) Weiss and to this union two children were born. After returning from active duty, Fred farmed near Garner. He also worked and retired from Winnebago Industries. He spent his retirement years woodworking and refinishing projects. He was a member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Mason City and the V.F.W. Post 5515 in Garner.

He is survived by his wife, Vera Weiss of Mason City; daughters, Sharon (Art) Hitz and Linda (John) Hamilton; grandsons, Jeff (Jennifer) Hamilton and Bryan Hitz; three sisters; and one brother.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters; three brothers; one infant daughter; and two infant grandsons.
