Herman VerHoef, 92

Herman VerHoef, 92, of Forest City, died on Sunday, September 5, 2004, at the Good Samaritan Center in Forest City.

Funeral services were held on Friday, September 10, at the United Methodist Church in Forest City, with Rev. Catherine Luck officiating. Burial was in the Madison Township Cemetery in Forest City, with the Petersen Lund Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Herman VerHoef, was born on January 1, 1912 in Sioux County, Iowa, to John and Grace (Roetman) VerHoef. He moved with his parents to Hollandale, Minnesota, then later to Forest City. He was in the Christian Reformed Church. Herman was married to Lois Thompson on March 15, 1934. The couple lived in the Forest City area all their married lives. They were engaged in farming and later Herman went on to operate a blacksmith shop. He and Lois operated Herman's Cafe and then worked in maintenance for Winnebago County until his retirement.

Herman was an active member of the United Methodist Church. He enjoyed hunting and was an avid fisherman who loved to share his catch with family and friends. He did a lot of catch and release and was very protective of the environment. If you asked him where he caught the fish, he would reply, "In the pond." He will be remembered for his ready smile and quick "hello."

Herman is survived by his wife of 70 years, Lois of Forest City; two sisters, Katie Baartiman and husband, Ed of Sheldon and Nancy Steffen of Gamer; a brother, John VerHoef and his wife, Marjorie of Leland; two sisters-in-law, Uva Hanson and Willetta Thompson; several nieces and nephews; a host of friends; and brother-in-law, Don Gahan.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Jean; and a brother, Francis.
