Martha Riggle, 1921-2006

Martha Riggle, of Crystal Lake, died on Friday, January 20, 2006, at the Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt. She was 84.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, January 24, at the United Methodist Church of Crystal Lake. The Rev. Charles Wallace officiated. Music was provided by Anita Eden, who accompanied soloist, Bruce Wubben and congregational hymns. Honorary casket bearers were Galen Wooge, Jim Steffen and Vern Hockett.

Casket bearers were Pete Leuwerke, Lynn Wooge, Lyle Doege, Dennis Zuehl, Jerry Wilson, John Seim, Vernon Hansmeier and Marvin Haugland. Burial was in the Crystal Lake Cemetery, Crystal Lake. The Ewing-Dugger Funeral Home of Britt was in charge of the arrangements.

Martha Riggle, the daughter of Emmanuel and Anna (Elgland) Monsen, was born September 28, 1921, in Winnebago County. She attended country schools until moving to Forest City to babysit for families.

On January 9, 1941, Martha married Ernest Riggle at the Grant Church in rural Winnebago County. The couple farmed in the Crystal Lake and Hayfield areas before moving to the home place near Crystal Lake, where they farmed for over 50 years.

Martha enjoyed baking, making numerous wedding cakes. She enjoyed helping with field work, gardening, crocheting, bowling, and going for a drive. She was a member of both TOPS and the Linden Ladies Club.

She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Ernest; along with numerous nieces, nephews and other family members.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Elsie Wilson, Gladys Meyer and Ann Jordan; and her brother, Martin Monsen.
