Herbert Irving, 1919-2006

Herbert H. Irving, 86, of Garner, died on Tuesday, March 14, 2006, at the Concord Care Center, Garner.

Funeral services were held on Friday, March 17, at the United Methodist Church in Garner with the Rev. David Wagner officiating. Music was provided by organist, Mary Kopacek who accompanied soloist, Bernie Urich and congregational hymns.

Casket bearers were Steve Casperson, Paul Anderson, Thomas Sammons, Tim Casperson, Tim Schmidt and Dennis Drabek. Burial was in the Concord Township Cemetery, Garner with military rites by the Garner Veterans Ceremonial Unit. The Cataldo Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Herbert Haskell Irving, the son of Clinton William and Ida Josephine (Haskell) Irving was born on September 21, 1919, at Winnebago, Illinois. The family moved to a farm southeast of Garner in February of 1920. Herb attended the rural schools of Ell Township and then the Garner Public Schools. He worked with his father for nine years. He served his country during WW II in the U.S. Army.

On February 12, 1943, he married Gelaine Evelyn Palma (Jensen) at Bethany, Missouri. Herb worked for Elmer Urich, Iowa Electric Light & Power Company, was a business partner with Buck Nonnweiler and in 1955 had his own electrical business. From 1978-80 he worked at Lauritsens and then retired.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church and the Garner American Legion.

Survivors include his wife, Gelaine of Garner; three daughters, Pat L. Maben (Gary) of Garner, Carol A. Anderson (Paul) of Appleton, Wisconsin and Helen J. Sammons (Thomas) of Tyler, Texas; two grandchildren, Heather Hallett and Kendra Hallett; four great-grandchildren, Dakotah, Jeremy, Jenna and Taylor; a great-great-granddaughter, Riley; two sisters, Norma Petit of Garner and Eleanor Brozik of Garner and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a granddaughter, Sarah Maben; two grandsons, Scott Maben and Jeffrey Graham; and a sister, Myrtle Casperson Zwald.
