BRITT: Ruth M. Johnson, 93, of Britt, died Saturday (March 4, 1995) at Westview Care Center.
Funeral Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Bethel Baptist Church, with the Rev. Stephen D. Kowbel officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.
Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. today at Ewing Funeral Chapel, Britt, and one hour prior to services at the church.
Mrs. Johnson was born May 30, 1901, on a farm northwest of Wesley. She graduated from Wesley High School in 1920 and married Elmer Johnson on March 28, 1923. The couple farmed in the Wesley and Lone Rock areas until 1939 when they moved to the Britt area and farmed until 1954, when her husband passed away. Ruth then moved into Britt. She was employed at Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt from 1955 to 1974. She was a very creative person and was always dedicated to any task set before her. She loved to read and enjoyed poems, playing the piano and singing with her family. She was an active member of Bethel Bapitist Church. She was also a member of Hancock County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, American Legion Auxiliary, and the Hancock County Historical Society. She was a resident of the Westview Care Center for the past 6 1/2 years, where she received tender, loving care.
Survivors include two sons, Denny and his wife, Marjorie, of rural Britt, and Walter and his wife, Wilhemine, of Dover, Del.; 3 daughters, Jean and her husband, Dale Knapper, of Maxwell, Calif., Sharlene Beenken, of Mason City, and Mary and her husband, Curtis Lewerke, of Joice; 21 grandchildren; 37 great grandchildren; two sisters in law, Edna Flom and Adah Larson, both of Wesley; and numerous nieces and nephews and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Elmer; son in law, Wesley Beenken; grandson, Gregory Lewerke; great grandson, Victor Brown; four brothers; and three sisters.
