John McMahon

BRITT - John McMahon, 98, passed away Tuesday (Nov. 20, 2001) at Westview Care Center, Britt.

His funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Britt, with Fr. Marvin Bries officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in Corwith.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Ewing Funeral Chapel in Britt. A scriptural wake service will begin at 7 p.m. and a Knights of Columbus rosary at 7:30.

He was born April 7, 1903, in Sexton, to John and Esther McMahon. He received his education there and farmed the homestead after his father passed away.

John met and married Stasis O'Brien. They had four children, Emmett, James, Leo and Marie.

During their 50 years of marriage they lived on farms near Wesley, Hutchins, Britt and Corwith. After Stasis passed away, he married Anne Sweeney. They resided-in Britt.

John loved farming. As well as working the land, he raised lots of livestock. He took pride in raising prime beef cattle and lambs. He was an active member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church and belonged to the Knights of Columbus.

He is survived by his three children, Emmett and wife, Evelyn, of Clearwater, Fla., Jim and wife, Nancy, of Huntsville, Ala., and Marie Egolf of Concord, Calif.; eight grandchildren, Jana, Kristi, Susan, John Joseph, Thomas, Jennifer, Sarah and John David; and nine great grandchildren. Also living are three nephews, Charles and Donald Lickteig of Algona and Tim; four nieces, Joan Elbert of Algona, Mary Lickteig of Omaha, Neb., and Sister Joan Lickteig and Sister Mary Clement of Dubuque.

John was preceded in death by his first wife, Stasis; his son, Leo; grandson, Mark; his wife, Anne Sweeney; his parents; three brothers, Francis, Luke and Charles; and three sisters, Mary, Rose and Louise.

He saw many changes during his lifetime. He enriched the lives of many people and will be missed by those who loved him.
