Bred Belgian HorsesServices for John L. Earles, 89, well known retired farmer and Belgian horse raiser, who died Sunday morning at the Mercy Hospital, Mason City, were held Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. at the Boughton Funeral Home.
The Rev. William R. Thomas was in charge of the services and the Rev. Harold Henry offered the prayer service.
John Lafayette Earles, son of Bennet and Mary J. Miller Earles, was born June 29, 1870, at Willow Wood, Ohio. He was baptized in infancy, and his education was received in his native community where he grew to manhood.
On Dec. 25, 1900, he was united in marriage to Amanzo Dunfee, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Dunfee, the wedding taking place in Ohio. The couple established their first home at Willow Wood, where Mr. Earles was employed by a lumber company and then in 1904 they moved to Illinois where they resided for some years while he was associated with an elevator.
Blessing the home of Mr. and Mrs. Earles were six sons and four daughters, Estel, Marie, Willie, Harlow, Slyvia, James, Burkley, Herschel, John and Nona. The family circle was broken when the son, James, passed away in infancy and later when the daughter, Sylvia, (Mrs. Ernest Karney) died.
The family moved to Hancock County in 1913 and farmed in the Corwith and Britt areas until retirement. Mr. Earles raised blooded belgium horses for many years.
For the past several years they have lived at Hutchens where they retired, and Mr. Earls has been in declining healthy, having been confined to the hospital at different times. Only recently he and Mrs. Earls moved to Rockwell to a nursing home. Following within a few days, Mr. Earles was taken to the Mercy Hospital where he passed away Sunday morning at he age of 89 years 4 months, and 10 days.
He is survived by his wife, the children, Estel, London, Minn.; Mrs. Marie Fillenwarth, Britt; Willie, Britt; Harlow, Des Moines; Burkley, Ft. Dodge; Hershel, Little Cedar; John Jr., Des Moines; and (Nona) Mrs. Melvin Van Duseldorp, Britt; as well as 24 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren.
He was the last member of his family having been preceded in death by his parents, and nine brothers and sisters.
The interment took place in the Evergreen Cemetery at Britt.
