1915-1985Funeral services for Vera Swan, 69, of Britt who died Jan. 19 at the Hancock County Memorial Hospital, were held Tuesday, Jan. 22 at 1:30 p.m. at the Congregational United Church of Christ. Rev. Levy Winfrey officiated.
Ruby Hodson accompanied soloist Charles T. McLaughlin.
Lloyd Rasmuson and Albert Rasmuson served as ushers. Casket bearers were Wilbert Freesman, Paul Smith, Roy Coslow, Herbert Prull, David Smith and Willie Bartik.
Interment was at Evergreen Cemetery in Britt. Services were under the direction of Carter Ewing Funeral Chapel.
Vera Mae (Thornbury) Swan was born Sept. 27, 1915 in Britt, the daughter of Alfred and Dora Mae (Smith) Thornbury. She grew up in the community and attended school in Britt.
She taught rural school for three and one half years. Jan. 1, 1937 she was united in marriage with Maurice E. Swan.
Vera was an active member of the Britt Congregational United Church of Christ, having taught Sunday School for many years and was a member of the Ladies Aid.
Survivors include her husband Maurice; two sons: Phillip and his wife Sandra of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Thomas of Buffalo, N.Y.; a daughter Margilea and her husband Ronald Abel, Greendale, Wisc.; a sister Mrs. Richard (Doris) Banning of Gahanna, Ohio; brother Dean and his wife Harriett of Bellevue, Neb.; sister-in-law Fern Thornbury of Buffalo Center; three grandchildren, many cousins, nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and brothers Keith, Jack and Fred.
