Lowell Schmidt, formerly of Woden and a resident of the Titonka Care Center, died Monday, January 16, 2012 at the Hancock County Memorial Hospital, Britt. He was 93.

A memorial service will be on Saturday, April 14, 2012, at 1:30 PM at Immanuel Lutheran Church, rural Titonka. Inurnment was in the Immanuel Lutheran Church Cemetery.

Lowell Ernest Schmidt was born May 14, 1918, in Grant Township, Winnebago County, Iowa to parents Ernest H. and Marie Kammeier Schmidt. He grew up on his parent's farm northeast of Titonka, Iowa. On June 18, 1941, he was united in marriage to Leona Violet Giesking in a double wedding ceremony with Leona's sister, Vera Marie Giesking and Elmer Ostermann at Immanuel Lutheran Church. They made their home on the Schmidt family farm where he farmed the land for over 50 years.

Lowell was a lifelong member of Immanuel Lutheran Church rural Titonka, Iowa. He served as treasurer of the church council. Other community involvement included serving on the Titonka Farmers' Co-op Oil Board of Directors. He was a member of the Titonka Savings Bank Board of Directors for 24 years. He enjoyed a variety of interests during his lifetime. They included owning and piloting his Piper Tri-Pacer airplane for 12 years, restoring his original John Deere GP tractor, woodworking, dancing, and traveling.

Lowell Schmidt died Monday, January 16, 2012 at the Hancock County Memorial Hospital, Britt. He was 93.

Survivors include his wife, Leona, of Titonka, daughter Carolyn Thomson and husband John of Sioux Falls, SD., daughter Mary Lande and husband Jim of Edina, MN, daughter Barbara Russell and husband Zacc of Phoenix, AZ, and son Ronald and wife Debra of Woden, IA. Also surviving are nine grandchildren: Angela Thomson, Lee Thomson, Mark Lande, Susan Lande, Tara Coons (daughter of Barbara Russell), Matthew Schmidt, Nicholas Schmidt, Tyler Schmidt, and Meaghan Schmidt. Four great grandchildren of Lowell include Collin, son of Lee and Jennifer Thomson, Garrett and Caitlin, children of Mark and Kristen Lande, and Tristan, son of Tara Coons; niece Shirley and husband Duane Boyken, sisters-in-law Clara Mayland, Vera Ostermann and Alice Giesking, brother-in-law Carl "Butch" and wife Dorothy Giesking.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister Lucille and husband John Ostermann, three other siblings, Esther, Marion, and Herbert Schmidt who died at birth and nephew Robert Ostermann, brothers-in law Erwin "Shorty" and wife Phyllis Giesking, Lewis and wife Julia Giesking, Elmer Ostermann, Henry Mayland, Merle Giesking and nephew Marlin Mayland.
