Harry James Schutter was born February 25, 1925 in German Valley, son of John and Martha (Bruns) Schutter. He attended German Township School and then farmed with his family before entering the service. Harry served in the United States Army from 1949 until 1953 serving as a Corporal in the 196th Field Artillery.

On February 3, 1960 Harry was united in marriage to Marcella Kelley at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mason City. He farmed in German Valley until his retirement in 1992. Harry loved being with his family, especially his grandchildren. Following retirement, he enjoyed wood carving and traveling with his wife. Harry was an active member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Woden and later at St. John's Catholic Church in Bancroft. Throughout the years he was involved with 4-H, with the Knights of Columbus and the Titonka VFW and American Legion.

Harry James Schutter died Wednesday, September 17, 2008 on his homestead, the same farm where he was born and spent his entire life.

He is survived by his wife Marcella of Titonka; two sons, John and his wife Paula of Lynnville, and Joe and his wife Kelly of Lakota; six grandchildren, Crystal Price of Brooklyn, Heather Talbert and her husband Mike of New Sharon, Amanda Russel and her husband Kyle of New Sharon, and Jenna, Krista, and Rachel Schutter all of Lakota; five great-grandchildren; one sister, Evelyn Taylor of Algona; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother Vernon Schutter.
