President-Elect for 4-H Girls in Hancock Dies From Hemorrhage
Garner, Aug. 9. - Ruth Tompkins, 16, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. P. S. Tompkins, of Old Concord, one mile south and west of Garner, president-elect of the Girls' 4-H clubs of Hancock county, died at a Mason City hospital at 3 o'clock Wednesday afternoon following an operation for the removal of her tonsils Saturday. On Wednesday of last week she had one of her ears lanced and was threatened with mastoid. Her death was caused from hemorrhage.
She was planning a motor trip to California with her parents and her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Burnham of Illinois, who had arrived several days ago. She was a senior of Garner high school and had taken an active part in girls' 4-H club work and was chosen 4-H style queen of Hancock county last year.
Born in October, 1919, she spent her life in Ellington township and for the past 10 years on the farm near Garner. Surviving are her parents, Mr. and Mrs. P. S. Tompkins and two brothers, Claire, 12, and Dean, 5, her uncle, C. H. Tompkins, principal of the Garner grade school and grandparents and many relatives. Funeral arrangements have not been made pending word from relatives in New York and California but will be held at the First Methodist church of which she was a member. The Rev. T. Enest Hoon will be in charge.
