Cecil Mau, 51, Charles City, Dies at Home

Charles City - Cecil Mau, popular athletic coach and for the last seven years secretary and director of the Charles City YMCA, died at 10:30 a.m. Sunday at his home here. He had been ill for about 18 months.

Mau, who was graduated from the State University of Iowa where he was an athletic standout in track, coached in the state of Wyoming and at Boone and Charles City before taking over his duties at the YMCA. He coached basketball at the Immaculate Conception High School here for several years before retiring from the coaching field after the 1951-52 season.

His 1949 I.C. basketball team was a standout in the class B field and represented North Iowa in the state basketball finals, Mau was well known as a sports official in North Iowa where he worked football and basketball games and was a starter in track.

One of Mau's athletic greats at Boone High School was Mike Enich. Enich went to the State University of Iowa where he became an All-American tackle on the famous Hawkeye football team of 1939. Enich played on the "Iron Men" team with Al Couppee and Nile Kinnick. Kinnick was killed in action during World War II.

Mau, who would have been 51 next Wednesday, was born at Britt. He is survived by his wife and three sons. Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Charles City Congregational Church.
