James Alfred Gilbert was born November 5, 1881 at Monroe, Green, Wisconsin to Amy Catherine Kelly and Peter Gilbert. His parents moved their family west to settle at Hancock County, Iowa.

Found in the 1895 & 1900 censuses living at Ell, Hancock, Iowa:
1895: James Gilbert age 13.
1900: Peter Gilbert 75, Ann Gilbert 38, James Gilbert 17, Willie Gilbert 14, Lavern Gilbert 5, Martha Gilbert 10, Winnie Gilbert 5.

James married Laura Edna Flint on February 21, 1906 at Garner, Hancock, Iowa.
The couple had 4 children:
Eva Marie (1907-1956);
Dean Alfred (1909-1958);
Raymond (1912-1982) and
Russell James (1918-1918).

(Wife Laura born April 10, 1884 at Broome, New York to Almeda Hardy and Frank Flint, died November 24, 1918 Hancock, Iowa shortly after the birth of Russell from the Spanish Influenza).

James next married Emma Marie Badker on June 23, 1920 at Garner, Hancock, Iowa. They had no children.

Found in the 1920 census living at Concord, Hancock, IA: J A Gilbert 37, Eva Gilbert 13, Dean Gilbert 10, Raymond Gilbert 6, Wm Badker 42, Jennie Badker 40, Roy Badker 17, Mary Badker 14, Merlin Badker 12[13], Kenneth Badker 10, Pheyllis Badker 8, Lola Badker 6, Bernice Badker 3, and 1/12.(William is Ida's nephew, listed with his wife Jennie and children.)

Found in the 1925 census at Algona, Kossuth, IA: James H Gilbert 41, Emma E Gilbert 41, Eva M Gilbert 18, Daara (Dean) Gilbert 15, Raymond C Gilbert 12, Oda (Ida) M Bodker 76 (Emma's mother).

James Alfred Gilbert died November 10, 1956 at Bethany, Harrison, Missouri and was buried at the Concord Cemetery, Garner, Hancock, Iowa.
